Codes & Conventions - What makes newspapers different to other forms of print media

Key Terms:
- Masthead - title on the front of the newspaper
- Barcode - used to scan the newspaper when purchasing
- Caption - brief text underneath to describe graphic or photograph
- Headline - a phrase that summarises the thing
- Main image - dominant image possessing most of the front cover
- Page numbers - a way of winding where you are in the newspaper
- Target population (demographic) -
- Quote - something taken from within an article, usually said by the person in the main image
- Classified Ad - a text only advert
- Skyline -
- Addition - Print several these a day, changes made over time
- Stand first - Introductory paragraph to draw the reader in
- Byline - The first line of the person and their job
- Body Text - main section of article
- Stand Alone - image only story
- Spread - a image covering a double page
- Lead Story - main story, usually a splash
- Gutter - the blank space between the margins
- Folio - top label for the whole page
- ???? - everything on the page except from pictures or text
