Analysing Images

1st Image
  • Symbolic - Happy families ~ proximity of the two people, facial emotions, perception of happiness
  • House - A home, family, beginnings, a place that is meant to be safe and protecting is secretly plagued
  • Facial expression of baby - deeper meaning, although an apparent 'happy' family, there is a demonstration of repressed misery
2nd Image
  • Police car - presents the grittiness of crime, surrounded by family homes, a complete contrast of the grainy background. The ability to know that something bad has happened
3rd Image
  • Hammer - The weapon, destruction, death, the simplicity gives an aura of evil and the colours being singular gives a level of mystery and gritty reality
4th Image
  • Policeman - Knowledge of sadness, the intrusion of law enforcement
THE TIMES
- Lots of information
- Level of suspects due to laws
- Reveals names and a slightly constructed portrayal of the night itself
- Reveals the ethnicity of both the suspect and mother of the children

THE DAILY MIRROR
- More direct - hammer attack
- Creates thrilling story - dramatic
- Lots of armature
- Should feel guilty

Point - Newspaper's uses the anchorage of contrasting images to construct the ideologies of the writer that what has occurred is a destruction of a happy family and that there is a level of shock in what has happened
Evidence - The contrasting image in themselves present the once happy couple being corrupted by the police car placed in front of the family home below the emotive picture of the now dead baby
Elaborate - This shows us that the producer wants to establish a level of shock value to the severity of crime, it hypes up the entire situation to give another level of horror to the original crime that in itself is already a disgusting display of human destruction

BBC Radio 4 - The Today Show

  • Doesn't start with the murder
  • Discusses politics first
  • First Stories: Russia, Theresa May, China, war & Trump's allegations that Obama wire tapped his phone during the election.
  • Declare it is a suspicion, They mention his arrest, simple, lack of heavy information, don't mention anything else other then his name and the crime given, doesn't specify the actual murder
Target Audience - Middle class ~ Lexus, lot's of assumed knowledge, they presume the listener has general understanding of politics, who political figures are and what their opinions are.

The editor chose to pick these stories because the political scene both national and international take priority over the discussion of other stories that affect smaller amounts of people.
