1) Representation

Explore how ideology is conveyed through the representation in this film poster

The use of an only female representation conveys the ideology that women are powerful, strong and independent. This use of representation subverts classic action films where men are usually leads, the way these women are presented shows classical conventions of men led action films, for example, all of the women are facing away into the distance, a convention presenting power. But the simple replacement of men with strong dominant females is in itself a branch of binary oppositions proposed by Stuart Hall in the way that the opposition of convention and subversion adopts the ideology that women have become stronger over time and are able to be as dominant and powerful as men.
The use of inclusion of characters of colour also creates an ideology of a subversive and almost rebellion towards classical presentations of people of colour in action/horror films. The black woman although not the largest presence on the poster is central and her costume conveys power as she is holding machinery, commanding attention from the viewer. The producer is using this representation as in classic horror and action, POC have been ones to die first or in fact be included as side or less major characters.

Humans and The Returned
To what extent does the set episode of Humans support Steve Neale’s suggestion that genres change over time? [15]

Because media products use allegories to present real life issues in the historical context of the time of its creation, Steve Neale's theory shows that genres change over the time as social change, technological advances and political ideologies continue to develop and change over time. In Humans, the once classical and mechanic representation of robots, a concept that we have feared with such classical representations being the Terminator have been replaced with beautiful, human like almost dolls that present conventionally 'perfect humans'. The uncanny valley explains that after a certain point, when something presents itself as almost human but not quite which creates a new breed of fear. This shows that we have changed from the once futuristic idea of robotics to a more subtle invasion of them replacing us by being better versions of us. Allegory for the fast paced advances in technology that general audiences cannot keep up. In one key scene, Mattie, while watching a news report on the televison she says 'are well just going to be poets then' showing the fear that us as labour workers and contributing society will be replaced with cheaper, robotic slaves which don't need human rights because they are 'not real'.
